Puffins
It was a lovely mild day down on the beach, with a very low tide.  We spent some time writing adjectives about the scenery that we were in.  In class we had been doing the same about the illustrations in the book that we were reading, so it was good fun to be inside the image and be able to add adjectives about all of our senses.
After snack we did some PE.  We started off by moving in a variety of ways, and then practiced dodging and moving to take or guard tag rugby tags.  It was great fun, and hot work!  We finished our morning on the beach making different shapes in the sand.

Last week at the beach the children were pretending to dig for pirate treasure so this week we decided to have a pirate book as our book at the beach.  Today we read ‘Pirate Pete and his Smelly Feet’ by Lucy Rowland and Mark Chambers.  After listening to the funny story, the Reception children had a go at writing about Pete’s smelly feet and the Nursery children practised writing their name.

In the story Pete stomps and squelches on the island.  We went on a stomping and squelching walk along the beach. We loved squelching through the seaweed! We then balanced on some driftwood and pretended that we were Pete walking the plank.

When the other pirates wash Pete, the water turns black.  On our walk we collected black stones and then put them altogether to see which ones were the ‘blackest’.

For our maths today, the Reception children practised their counting and ordering numbers and the Nursery children practised subitising numbers and making holes in the sand using the same number.

This week at Beach School has been nothing short of exhilarating! We commenced our adventures by sketching the sequence of events from the captivating story of "Ug the Boy Genius." Following our artistic endeavours, we took inspiration from Shackleton's Endurance Expedition. The children enthusiastically engaged in a project where they constructed their own ships using natural materials found along the shoreline. The level of creativity displayed was remarkable; some pupils even devised makeshift vessels intended to float down the estuary, simulating a real-life expedition. Throughout these activities, teamwork and problem-solving skills flourished. It was heartening to see the children collaborating, sharing ideas, and overcoming challenges together. The dynamic interactions among them were a joy to witness, embodying the spirit of exploration and camaraderie. In addition to our practical experiences, we delved into descriptive writing. The children observed the swiftly flowing water of the estuary and crafted vivid descriptive sentences to capture its essence. This exercise not only bolstered their writing skills, but also encouraged them to engage with their environment in a more meaningful way. To conclude our week, we returned to school to refine our volleyball skills. The enthusiasm and determination displayed during practice were commendable and a testament to their hard work. Overall, it has been an enriching week filled with learning, exploration, and fun!
