Starfish
We continued our book of the week at the beach today with ‘Super Duper You’ by Sophy Henn. After listening to the book, we made our own ‘Super Duper You’ books. We thought about different feelings and things that we like to do and drew them on the pages of our book.
We then went for a walk along the beach and collected some shells and stones in our buckets. We made some celebration sand cakes to celebrate how super duper we all are and used the shells and stones to decorate our cakes.
In maths the nursery children made sand currant buns and sang ‘Five currant buns’ and the Reception children put number cards in order and then played a game by hiding some numbers and working out which ones were missing.
We did some yoga on the beach and then headed up to the golf club for lunch.
What wonderful weather we had for our first beach school of the academic year! We began with Worship by the Waves which Mrs Popay led for the school. After that, Orcas began with a recap of yesterday’s learning about crime and punishment through different time periods. Today we had three scenarios from Romans, Medieval and Victorian. The children grouped into threes and chose a scenario to act out in front of the class. We also discussed topic specific language.
Moving on we read more of our class book Holes then the class wrote a diary entry from the perspective of Stanley as he enters Camp Green Lake.
Following a quick lunch at the Golf Club, Orcas and Seals came back to the beach, we completed PSHE with a game of would you rather, the children were given two options and needed to pick a side, we then had a discussion about how it’s ok to have different opinions to each other. Finally the children showed their individuality by using the natural resources to produce their name.
This week in Seal Class, we embarked on an exciting adventure at beach school! Our focus was on writing descriptive sentences that capture the beauty of the sea and the sky. We explored various words that convey our thoughts and feelings about the stunning coastal environment. The students worked diligently, and many created vivid sentences that painted pictures in the readers’ minds. For instance, one child described the sea as “a shimmering blanket of blue, glistening under the sun or a wide vast space of nothingness". After our writing session, we turned to artwork inspired by our sea friends—the seals! Following our artistic exploration, we practised our throwing and catching skills on the beach, which gave us opportunities to work together and develop our coordination. The fresh air and sand felt invigorating!. Post-lunch, we took part in a mindfulness session, where we learned the importance of relaxation and reflection. To conclude our wonderful day, we engaged in a teamwork activity, building a sculpture with natural materials found along the shore. It was a fantastic way to connect with nature and enhance our collaboration skills. What a brilliant week we have had in Seal Class!
