Starfish

This week it has been World Nursery Rhyme week.  In school we have been focussing on a different nursery rhyme each day.  At the beach today we sang the nursery rhyme ‘Hey Diddle Diddle’.

We listened to the story ‘The Great Nursery Rhyme Disaster’ by David Conway.  In the story Little Miss Muffet is bored of her own nursery rhyme so goes in search of a new nursery rhyme to be in. But before you can say Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, the whole book of rhymes is thrown into chaos!

We sang ‘Hey Diddle Diddle’ and each had a puppet which we used when it was our turn in the rhyme.    We then looked at different sized bowls and spoons and put them in size order.  We had great fun using the bowls to make ‘sandcastles’.

Today we used our sketch books to draw what we could see.  There were some very careful drawings of the sand, sea and Dunstanburgh castle.

The Reception children practiced pairs of numbers that make ten using shells on a tens frame.  They worked really hard finding the different pairs on numbers.

For our PE today we played a dish and spoon tag game and then practised our jumping pretending to be cows jumping over the moon.

At the beach today it was beautiful weather - how many more will we have before it turns really wintery?!  We started off by searching for, and choosing, a special shell that had an interesting story to tell.  We thought about what that story might be and shared some ideas with each other - from a waterpark slide, to a wedding dress, to a basket or special dolphin crisp.  We then wrote our shells' stories, before some of us shared them.

After snack we had a race to collect some shells in two groups and then counted how many we had.  We discovered that it is much easier to count and not lose track if we put them into lines of 10.  We then measured our shadow stick and were amazed that the shadow was 5 whiteboards and 5 cm long. We reflected on why there was such a big change between less than one whiteboard long in September, and the length now.  We talked about how in North Norway at this time of year it is dark almost all of the time and thought about how that might affect our lives.  We also revisited the continents and oceans of the world, shouting them as loudly as we could.

Next we did some PE.  We have been moving in a range of ways, and have been practising our coordination, going backwards, skipping, galloping and going sideways crossing one leg over.  This was definitely challenging for some!  We finished off our morning with some time playing in the dunes.  We had to use our core muscles to climb up, and run and jump down again.  We got very hot, and had to take off our coats, but it was great fun.
