Puffins
It was quite chilly, and a bit slippy going down to the beach, but not too bad, and definitely worth it!  We were amazed at the frozen sand, and how it was so much easier to walk on.  We also noticed that we didn't leave footprints.  After Worship by the Waves we wrote about what it was like at the beach today (bright sunshine, frosty sand).  We then warmed up by playing in the dunes.  The solid sand made it like stepping stones or stairs to get to the top. After some snack, including warm orange squash, we started thinking about our new geography and PE topics, where we need to use maps.  We learnt about the difference between human and physical geography, and looked around us for examples of each.  We were planning on taking a slow walk up the hill, taking photos of examples of both, but then it started hailing, so we abandoned the plan and just came straight back up to school - slightly soggy and definitely ready for our lunch!

Starfish

Our story at the beach today was ‘Stomp, Dinosaur, Stomp!’ by Margaret Mayo and Alex Aycliffe.  We matched some of our toy dinosaurs to the dinosaurs in the book.  As we listened to the story we stomped, took big strides, ran, raced, pounced, charged and strolled like the dinosaurs in the book.  Earlier in the week we found out that ferns were growing when dinosaurs were alive so at the beach today we looked for some ferns.  As it was winter the ferns had died but we were still able to find some brown fern to hide our dinosaurs in.

Orcas

First beach school of 2025 and I am so proud of each member of this class! The weather could be described as somewhat tricky, we had rain, snow / hail and sun and not one child complained! We had jobs to do and completed them to a high standard.

After our first worship of 2025 we then started with PE. This half term we are concentrating on Cross Country. Year 5 children had the goal of completing an 800m run with Year 6 aiming to complete 1000m. Each week we will aim to complete a run, time ourselves and then aim to increase the distance. Then plan a route and complete a cross country run.

Moving to Maths we used the tide times and analogs clocks to show the time and distinguish the different tides throughout the week, reading the time from the table and then showing the time on the clock. We then discussed the relationship between the moon cycle and the tide times and gravitational force.

During a quick snow shower we moved to Geography where we used a map of Brazil which included a key showing key geographical features include rainforest and waterfalls. The children worked in a team to make their own map and then used different natural resources to show each element of the map - well some natural resources as Christ the Redeemer was represented with a car mud flap which one of the children found - we are timetabled to complete a litter pick this half term!

Well done Orcas you all showed a great attitude and good resilience skills today.
