Welcome back after the Christmas break. Hope it was a restful one! Ha. Thank you for the cards and gifts received at the end of term. It was very kind of you.
We were straight back in to our learning on Monday with some writing about a special memory from the holidays; whether that was our favourite Christmas present, favourite time spent with family or an activity they did. The children made sure they used capital letters and full stops and used some adjectives to add detail. We also shared our thoughts on the front cover of our new text for this half term. We shared our ideas about the boy in the image and thought about where he might be or what he was doing. We wrote some thought bubbles too.
In maths, we have begun our unit on shape. This week we have been recapping the names of 2D and 3D shapes. We talked about real life objects that we the same shape and went on a hunt around the classroom to find some of them. Some were easier than others to find!
We also began our new PE unit which is dance this half term. We are making up some dances to retell the story of the Great Fire of London. This week we were the spark that started the fire and the flames that roared through the streets. We had some very creative movements. Speaking of the Great Fire of London, we had a quiz to test our recall of the events. The children did well and had remembered lots of information about the Great Fire of London.
Our design technology theme this half term is Fairground Wheels. We did some research on different ones. We looked at shape, decorations, number of pods and location. We looked at some pictures that Miss Murray took of the Ferris Wheel at the Northern Lights show in Newcastle to see one in action. We also looked at the London Eye and some of the views from the top. We then used this research as inspiration to design our own.
But the most exciting thing this week was having the Sphero Indi’s back in class in order to do some programming. We were given an Indi car and a green mat and asked to investigate what happens with the green mat when the car is placed on top. We discovered that the green mat means go! Then we investigated how two green mats would affect the car, we had the mats side by side and also further apart and observed the difference. We then went into the hall and used 3 green mats for a while. The challenge was to place the green mats in an order to make the car travel the furthest distance and then at the end of the session we had a race to see whose car went the furthest. It was a close call in the end!
First Big Maths session of the term produced some great results and one promotion for ARCHIE! Well done.
Have a lovely weekend
