As this week is the last week of our theme ‘Splish, Splash, Splosh’ we looked at the world map and at a globe and saw how much of the earth is covered in water. We discussed the difference between the land and the sea and spoke about different countries in the world that we knew the names of. We learnt the names of the different continents. Each day we found the different countries on the map and on the globe and found out how long it would take us to get there.
On Monday we learnt about Australia. We listened to the story ‘No room for a Baby Roo’ and found out about some of the animals that live in Australia. Some of us used step by step drawing instructions to draw kangaroos and koalas, we did a great job as it was quite tricky! We looked at some Australian Aboriginal art made using dots and some of us created our own dot paintings. For our snack today we made Australian fairy bread, we all loved it! The nursery children built cube towers as tall as the toy animals from the story.
On Tuesday we learnt about Ukraine. We watched a video that gave us some information about Ukraine and we learnt some Ukrainian dancing. We also listened to the Ukrainian folk tale ‘The Mitten’ and some of us did some threading using mitten shapes. For our snack today we iced biscuits to look like the Ukrainian flag, they were very yummy but a bit sticky! Some of the Reception children had some help doing some paper folding using the colours of the Ukrainian flag to make a bookmark while the nursery children did some pattern matching with mittens.
On Wednesday we learnt about Japan. We found out some information about Japan and some of us dressed up in a kimono, the traditional Japanese dress. In the tuff tray we had some sand, some rakes and some stones and re recreated some Japanese zen gardens. The Reception children made some sushi. It was really fun to make, some children really loved it, others weren’t so keen! We then made some paper cats using the Japanese art of origami. We watched a video about cherry blossom and made our own cherry blossom pictures.
On Thursday we learnt about America. We sailed into New York harbour on a cruise ship! We then watched a video about the USA. Some children then made torches like the Statue of Liberty holds by using flame coloured tissue paper. We had yummy hotdogs for our snack and then painted the America flag using our fingers to make the stars.
On Friday we learnt about Madagascar and as it was the last day of term we watched the film ‘Madagascar’.
We have had a great week finding out about different countries this week. We have borrowed some world map puzzles from Puffin and Seal class and, although they have been a bit tricky we have got really good at doing them and have loved finding different countries.
Even though it has been the last week of term we have been very busy and we are now all looking forward to a good rest over the summer ready to come back in September to do lots more learning!
