This week we started our new theme ‘Legs and Tails’. This half term we will be learning about animals and use animal themed stories as our focus books. Our book this week has been ‘Oi Frog!’ by Kes Gray and Jim Field. This is one of our favourite books in Starfish class! In the story frogs sit on logs, cats sit on mats and hares sit on chairs. Rather less comfortably, lions sit on irons and storks sit on forks. As frog fires questions at Cat, he discovers where gorillas, puffins and wizards should sit until the answer to his final question keeps him quiet for a very long time!
Our Rainbow Challenges this week have been related to this book:
Writing – Nursery: Write the animal names and tell an adult what your writing says Reception: Write the animal names and use the sounds that you know in your writing.
Drawing – Follow the instructions to draw a frog
Maths – Nursery: Make a cake for a snake to sit on Reception: Weigh out the ingredients and make a cake for a snake to sit on
Construction – Nursery: Make a chair for a hare Reception: Make a chair for a hare, a stool for a mule and a sofa for a gopher.
Creative – Nursery: Paint a picture of a cat on a mat Reception: Paint a picture of a cat on a stripy mat
Outside –Collect some logs for frogs to sit on
Funky Fingers – Nursery: Sit the moles on the poles Reception: Sit the moles on the poles before the timer runs out.
In RWInc the Reception children have been learning the sounds ay, ee and igh. The nursery children have been focusing on sounds in the environment and listening to the sounds that words start with.
In maths this week the Reception children have been learning about shapes. The nursery children have been focussing on number two and counting out up to six objects.
We started a new theme in music this week: Celebration Music. This week we found out about Divali. We listened to some music that is played to celebrate divali and then used scarves to dance to the music with. In PE with Sam we continued practising our tag games and also practised some ball control as well as using the basketball net. Our poem this week was ‘I wear a little poppy’. On Friday we recited the poem in our Remembrance service on the beach.
We started a new theme in RE this half term ‘Why do Christians perform nativity plays at Christmas?’. This week our question was ‘Why do Christians celebrate Christmas?’. We listened to the Christmas story and found out that Christians celebrate that God’s son, Jesus was born at Christmas. Some of us used the nativity set to retell the story.
This week we also found out why we have fireworks on 5th November. We made some glittery firework pictures. Lots of us went to the firework display in the village so were able to talk about what we had seen.
We have loved our story ‘Oi Frog!’ this week and can remember where all the animals need to sit. We have also learnt a song about the story.
Next week is World Nursery Rhyme Week. We shall be fully embracing this in Starfish Class! Nursery rhymes play an important role in early childhood development and education. Nursery rhymes and children’s songs boost vocabulary and language development. They help children to develop literacy skills and can provide a fun way to support early numeracy skills. Each day we shall be focusing on a different nursery rhyme.
