This week we began our new theme this week ‘On The Move’. Our book has been 'The Train Ride' by June Crebbin. In the story a little girl and her mother board the train in town and set off on a journey through the countryside. As they travel, the girl looks out of the window, asking "What shall I see? What shall I see?". As we go through the book we see all the things the little girl can see out of her window.
Our Rainbow Challenges this week have been related to this.
Writing – Nursery: Write about the story and tell an adult what your writing says Reception: Write about the story and use the sounds you know in your writing
Drawing – Follow the instructions to draw a steam train
Maths – Nursery: Find the correct coins to pay for the train ticket Reception: Use coins to make the amount to pay for the train tickets
Construction – Nursery: Make a train track with a station Reception: Make a train track and a station and write a sign with your station name

Funky Fingers – Nursery: Follow the train track with a pencil keeping inside the tracks Reception: Use five different coloured pencils to follow the train track making sure you keep inside the tracks
In RWInc the Reception children have moved onto purple ditty books and have been recapping all the Set 2 sounds. Some of the nursery children have been learning about the sound ‘n’ and have been playing some rhyming games and the other nursery children have been playing a forest sounds bingo game thinking about the sounds and noises Little Red Riding Hood might have heard when she walked through the wood as well as talking about the animals she might have seen in the wood.
In maths the Reception children have been using the part whole model to show different ways of making ten. The nursery children have been using the Numicon to help them learn about numbers to five and some nursery children have been learning about capacity.
This week in music we began our new theme of ‘Musical Stories’. We listened to the song ‘Teddy Bears Picnic’ and used some teddies to dance with. We followed the instructions for a dance. We were very excited to have Sam back from NUFC this week to do some PE with us. We played some tag games and used different sizes of balls and rolled them to each other. We continued working on our Crest Star Award. This week we worked on our ‘Useless Umbrellas’ challenge. We tested different materials to see which ones were waterproof. With Miss Murray we focused on listening really carefully. We played ‘Simon Says’ and a feely bag game. The train in our story this week is a steam train. We have borrowed a box from Bailiffegate Museum with lots of artefacts and books about the history of railways. We looked at clothes that the driver and conductor might have worn. We also listened to a train whistle.
On Tuesday it was Shrove Tuesday. We learnt about why some people eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. Mrs Cotton made pancakes with us. We cooked our pancakes in the microwave. We then chose our own toppings and they were delicious!
Our big RE question this half term is ‘Why do Christians put a cross in an Easter garden?’. This week we heard the story of Palm Sunday. We made some paper palm leaves and then danced to a song about Palm Sunday.
On Thursday it was World Book we used the book ‘The Cat in the Hat’ by Dr Seuss. We listened to the story, designed a new hat for the cat, made our own stripy numbered ‘Cat in the Hat’ hats, coloured some pictures from the story and made a list of ‘cat’ rhyming words. Seal class came in to read us some stories.
Next week we will continue with our story 'The Train Ride' by June Crebbin.
